Such long-established, deep-rooted fiestas as those of San Fermín cannot be improvisad. There is an official programme which has developed over the years into a patchwork quilt of different events. These form the outline, the common thread or heart of the festival.

Apart from the religious aspects which gave rise to the celebration, and which still today hold great importance for the people of Pamplona, there is a whole series of established events which make up the framework of the programme of the fiestas and which take place daily.
