Dance
festival
The
stony, belowground-level oval of the Plaza de los Fueros, cut off from the
city by an always-green park and in the middle of a major road junction,
is horne to the folk festival which takes place at one o'clock in the
aftemoon on the sixth of July, so-on after the firing of the rocket which
announces the start of the Fiesta (already in full swing). Here, the
people from Parnplona and the visitors to the city enjoy themselves by
dancing an aurresku (Basque dance of welcome), a jota from
Ochagavía, a paloteado frorn the South of Navarra, a dantza
from Zuberoa (north), a group dance or the multitudinous baile de la
Era from Estella, a moment when many spectators become actors and join
the rows of dancers in their colourful costumes, large belts and
sharp-sounding small bells.
The dancing is a chance for
people to enter into contact with the folk roots of Navarra, with everyone
holding back their emotions, quite a contrast with the festive craziness
going on around them.
