The heart of the Fiesta

When las Peñas leave the bullring

Las Peñas en el tendido de sol de la Plaza de TorosThe Peñas leave the bullring after the bullfight and swamp the city with their music and fun. The Peñas are the heartbeat of the Fiesta, indeed, what would Sanfermines be without the Peñas? They are the protagonists of the best moments of the Fiesta.

They dream about the Sanfermines all year long and prepare for them with a certain 'disorganised order', because experience tells that spontaneity is the best bet to make sure that things go off well.

Salida de las peñas de la Plaza de Toros de PamplonaIn a certain manner the Peñas represent - just one form - the character of the people of Navarra, straightforward, direct. For just these few days every year the rigid behaviour of conventional society takes a back seat. The Peñas take over the streets, dancing and leaping around, floodingthe streets with the "Pamplona sound" of their brass bands.

When the bullflght finishes the Peñas return to their 'natural habitat', the streets, which are invaded by a whirlwind of music, songs, and dances. What would become of the streets without the Peñas?
